Teacher of the Year 2025-2026
Palmetto Unified School District proudly recognizes Yvette Lakin as our 2025–2026 Teacher of the Year!
For Yvette, this honor is more than a title, it is a reflection of her unwavering commitment to the students she serves and their unique journeys to success. Her path to education began in an unexpected place, as a correctional officer. There, she discovered a passion for teaching and a calling to empower individuals through learning. This realization became her lifelong mission, to ensure that every student knows their potential is not defined by their circumstances.
Throughout her career with the South Carolina Department of Corrections and Palmetto Unified School District, Yvette has specialized in GED instruction for Reading Language Arts and Math. She has transformed countless lives, guiding students from uncertainty to confidence, and equipping them with the skills for lifelong achievement.
Her teaching philosophy is built on resourcefulness, humility, and empathy. Yvette meets students where they are, personalizing lessons with real-world applications, hands-on learning, and steadfast encouragement. She leads by example, modeling resilience, setting high expectations, and fostering hope in every classroom interaction.
As she puts it, “Education is not just what I do, it is who I am.”

PUSD Kicks Off the 2025–2026 School Year with Inspiring Convocation and Board Meeting
On July 11, 2025, Palmetto Unified School District (PUSD) launched the new academic year with a powerful Convocation and Board Meeting at the SCDC pavilion in Columbia, SC. The day brought together educators, administrators, and district leaders to align on goals, celebrate excellence, and prepare for the year ahead.
The morning began with warm greetings from Dr. Cynthia Cash-Greene, followed by the introduction of staff across all regions by PUSD principals. It was an energizing start that set the tone for a day of connection, recognition, and forward focus.

Carpentry
Students learn to measure, cut, and construct with precision, mastering techniques to build structures that stand the test of time. Carpentry skills not only serve as the backbone of the construction industry but also foster problem-solving and teamwork.
Masonry
Craftsmanship takes center stage in masonry as students learn to shape and lay bricks, stone, and concrete. They develop the skills needed to construct durable and aesthetically pleasing structures that define our communities.
Master Hair Care

Jolly Times at Palmetto Unified: A Festive Holiday Gathering 2023!
Step into a winter wonderland at Palmetto Unified School District, where holiday joy was in full swing! Our festive gathering brought together teachers and administration for a memorable celebration filled with laughter, cheer, and a dash of Christmas magic.
Santa’s visit brought smiles as bright as Rudolph’s nose!
Our holiday feast was a feast-ive delight, with sugar plum cookies and candy cane cocoa that delighted taste buds. The cafeteria became a gingerbread dreamland, turning the evening into a gastronomic journey through the 12 days of Christmas!
The talent show stole the spotlight, showcasing staff members’ festive spirit through song, dance, and even some elfish acrobatics. Applause rang out as loud as Christmas morning wake-up calls, proving that Palmetto Unified’s staff are the true stars of the show!
But the fun didn’t stop there! We added an extra dash of holiday hilarity with an Ugly Sweater Contest and a sing-along of classic Christmas tunes that had everyone rocking around the Christmas tree.
As the festivities wrapped up, laughter echoed through the halls, and twinkling lights sparkled a little brighter. Palmetto Unified’s staff wishes you a holly, jolly Christmas and a Happy New Year, filled with the warmth of shared moments and the magic of the season.

During the previous School Year, I was nominated for the Teacher of the Year by fellow staff members. Not knowing where this would go, I was chosen to hold the position as Teacher of the Year for the 2022 – 2023 School Year. This is an honor to behold.
As the Teacher of the Year, I want to represent Palmetto Unified School District’s Mission and Vision in my day-to-day duties as a school leader and teacher. I feel part of this is to become more knowledgeable of changes in education that impact our student population and help other teachers who want to improve professionally. Representing Palmetto Unified School District as Teacher of the Year is an honor that I hope to uphold for this 2022-2023 School Year.
