Jolly Times at Palmetto Unified: A Festive Holiday Gathering 2023!

Step into a winter wonderland at Palmetto Unified School District, where holiday joy was in full swing! Our festive gathering brought together teachers and administration for a memorable celebration filled with laughter, cheer, and a dash of Christmas magic.

Santa’s visit brought smiles as bright as Rudolph’s nose!

Our holiday feast was a feast-ive delight, with sugar plum cookies and candy cane cocoa that delighted taste buds. The cafeteria became a gingerbread dreamland, turning the evening into a gastronomic journey through the 12 days of Christmas!

The talent show stole the spotlight, showcasing staff members’ festive spirit through song, dance, and even some elfish acrobatics. Applause rang out as loud as Christmas morning wake-up calls, proving that Palmetto Unified’s staff are the true stars of the show!

But the fun didn’t stop there! We added an extra dash of holiday hilarity with an Ugly Sweater Contest and a sing-along of classic Christmas tunes that had everyone rocking around the Christmas tree.

As the festivities wrapped up, laughter echoed through the halls, and twinkling lights sparkled a little brighter. Palmetto Unified’s staff wishes you a holly, jolly Christmas and a Happy New Year, filled with the warmth of shared moments and the magic of the season.

Teacher of the Year 2022-2023

We are proud to introduce our 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year, Ryan Bartola.

During the previous School Year, I was nominated for the Teacher of the Year by fellow staff members. Not knowing where this would go, I was chosen to hold the position as Teacher of the Year for the 2022 – 2023 School Year. This is an honor to behold.

As the Teacher of the Year, I want to represent Palmetto Unified School District’s Mission and Vision in my day-to-day duties as a school leader and teacher. I feel part of this is to become more knowledgeable of changes in education that impact our student population and help other teachers who want to improve professionally. Representing Palmetto Unified School District as Teacher of the Year is an honor that I hope to uphold for this 2022-2023 School Year.

“My greatest contributions and accomplishments are engraved in my memory instead of plaques or LinkedIn professional posts. They are the moments when you see the wide eyes of students who finally mastered a skill or see their MAP or NRS reading score rise. The transition into authentic learning and understanding that marks success for me. For example, one year, I did a literacy circle with a class of emerging learners who struggled with reading and behavior. They teased and argued daily. We analyzed a poem entitled “Griefs That Stay.” A young lady shared her pain of losing her grandfather. As a tear fell down her face, a male student reached out and held her hand. That is transformative teaching; that is an accomplishment. ” – Gwynette Waters

This year for the 2020 Holidays we celebrated our employees a little differently. To keep everyone at a distance, employees from all across the state visited us at the District Office for a no-contact Holiday Drive-Through. The District Office staff braved the cold and handed out food and drinks to our hard working employees.

Palmetto Unified School District is excited to announce our 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year, Mr. Jamie Jeter.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”]“I am grateful for my childhood, as those experiences have molded me into the hardworking individual that I am. I was blessed to grow up with parents that displayed discipline and great work ethics. Unlike me, many of the students I serve came from single parent homes and disrupted environments. When I noticed this disparity among my students, I wanted to be that person to help them get a new start and become successful. My thoughts grew from just teaching inmates how to lay brick to, after a few years of teaching, helping these inmates become better all-around individuals in addition to becoming bricklayers.

As an instructor, I have high expectations of my students and myself. I assure each student that there is some type of job in the masonry field for each one of them, whether you are a skilled- bricklayer or a bricklayer’s assistant. My desire for them is that they will leave the institution, become employed and moreover become law-abiding, tax paying citizens. My commitment to excellence in teaching has led me to having over numerous ex-offenders currently employed in the masonry trade.

My vision includes developing students’ cognitive skills and social skill so that they can think critically and rationally. This is extremely valuable in dealing with daily problems they face, inside and outside the SCDC. Having these skills may knock down many barriers, bring families together, and reduce crime and the recidivism rate.

With a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Limestone College and a certificate in Youth Development Leader from Clemson University, my education experience has better equipped me to serve as an educator and a mentor with this diverse population.

I currently work at Tyger River Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison, that houses approximately 900 inmates. Vocational training at this facility includes Masonry, HVAC, Auto Body, and Auto Mechanics. Inmates can also earn a GED and learn to read while incarcerated at Tyger River. Within 30 days of release, services expand to include reintegration into the community, housing, and employment support and resources.”
